2020 has been a challenging year to say the least. Even the calmest people that we know are feeling the stress of the times. It’s important when faced with such trials and tribulations that we are able to maintain our focus, our balance, and our ability to keep moving forward in a reasonable and productive manner.
Many of our lives require our active participation and full attention. “Not showing up” is not an option. This is why having the help of plant allies is such a blessing – especially right now, when there is a need to remain calm, fair, balanced and focused as best we can.
Pharmaceutical solutions for stress and anxiety can be overwhelming and cause potential damage to our bodies over time. Many people have found that the side effects of using pharmaceuticals greatly outweigh the benefits, and particularly in the case of anxiety and depression, those pharmaceuticals can make the situation worse over time.
CBD Oil
Perhaps one of the best gifts given to us by nature is the Cannabis plant and the cannabinoid molecules found within it. Among these cannabinoids is one of nature’s most effective balancing and healing tools: Cannabidiol, or CBD for short.
CBD is the most well-known and widely used of the non-psychotropic cannabinoids. It creates no sensation of being high when ingested and has the potential to fulfill a number of functions within the body that can lead to better sleep, relaxation and pain-relief. It does this by communicating and interacting with the ECS (Endocannabinoid System). This interaction determines the specific and immediate needs of your body; CBD then works with the ECS to ensure that those needs are met.
How CBD And The ECS Aid Depression and Anxiety
In the case of depression and anxiety, CBD communicates with specific receptors in the ECS so that the body releases enzymes that prevent the breakdown of specific molecules. These molecules create a sense of relaxation and contentedness. By ensuring that their breakdown – or ‘reuptake’ – is delayed, the molecules continue to provide the body with their beneficial effects.
CBD is also thought to have an effect on the amount of serotonin that is produced by the body, which reacts with the brain to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. There’s also evidence that CBD can promote neurogenesis – the creation of new neurons – within the hippocampus, which is responsible for governing our emotions.
Being Responsible With CBD
Although CBD can be an effective treatment for both anxiety and depression, it should not be used as a replacement for existing anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications. Stopping such medications suddenly can lead to serious side effects. If you are currently taking such medication, please consult with your doctor or a trained healthcare professional to find the best option for your situation.
That’s all for this week, folks. Remember that this is not a time to bend, break or fold – rather, this is a time to strengthen and balance ourselves, individually and collectively. This is a time that requires active participation in our lives. This is not a time to “not show up”. Be well, stay safe, and see you next Friday.
