Last weeks blog/story from our CEO John Miles inspired me to do more research into cannabinoids and Covid. Normally we would shy away from this type of thing. There is more than enough misinformation out there about Covid, the causes and the treatment. We do not want to add to the confusion. The information that I found however was so compelling that I think it is important to share. In no way are we making any medical claims in regard to cannabinoids and Covid. We are simply sharing the information that we have found.
CBD and the Immune System
CBD is good for maintaining homeostasis in the body. Homeostasis is the system that maintains the core systems of the body. Breathing, heartbeat and especially bodily responses like inflammation.
It also keeps the immune system harmonized and in balance. This ensures that the immune system is able to respond adequately and appropriately to any given threat.
The science behind it is pretty intense but the short of it is that, the immune effects of CBD occur through its interaction with a variety of receptors. CB1 and CB2 are the main ones in addition to others. You can read more about it here. The evidence appears to be pointing in the direction of CBD being a strengthening support for the immune system.
Beyond Prevention
CBD is also well known for its anti-inflamatory properties. We usually think of this in terms of sprained ankles or arms. Researchers however, think of this in terms of the whole body. Researchers at Chicago University thought that this whole body approach might make CBD useful in the second stage of development of the Covid virus. This is the stage that involves the immune system and the cytokine storm. When I first read this I was like, wait, the second stage? A storm?? What the…
Into the Storm
The researchers, who’s work you can read here, decided to introduce the CBD in the second stage of the development of the virus. The results were surprising to say the least. According to Dr. Marsha Rosner “it [CBD] directly inhibited viral replication in lung cells.”PhD, Charles B. Huggins Professor in the Ben May Department of Cancer Research and a senior author of the study.
Taking a Closer Look
As the researchers began to look more closely the interaction between CBD and the virus it became clear that CBD was able to inhibit the viruses ability to replicate itself. The implication is that when taken early on in the illness CBD can help to slow the spread of the infection. The researchers admitted that they only wanted to see how CBD interacts with the immune system. They were definitely NOT expecting to see evidence that CBD was blocking the virus from replicating.
Stopping it Before it Gets Started
The most recent study results to come out of The Linus Pauling Center at Oregon State state were a bit different. The Chicago study showed that CBD stops the virus from replicating once it enters a human cell. The OSU study showed that CBD-A (see our blog post) is actually able to prevent Covid from entering human cells in the first place. So essentially CBD combined with CBD-A would be like the cannabinoid dynamic duo for fighting Covid.
Disclaimer
Now as most of us are already aware we are not making any kind of clinical or medical claims in regard to CBD and Covid. We are simply sharing the admittedly surprising results of current and respected clinical studies. We all have our own bodies and are our own experiences and we generally know what works for us and what does not.
Having said that, we have seen people have positive results. If you or anyone you know currently has Omicron and you are curious, pop by the shop and pick up some tincture and see for yourself. You might be pleasantly surprised. We know we were.
