Hi gang!! It’s been a couple of weeks since we posted. It’s not you, it’s me. I was definitely trying to suck every last drop of summer fun that I could out of the limited time that we have left. But that is all over now. And it’s time to start getting ready to go back to the grind. Which is totally cool with us, there is a bold new future for us out there and we are ready to embrace it. So, let’s go!!
The Importance of Sleep
It is estimated that we will spend one third of our lives sleeping. Sleep is as important to our survival as food and water. It is a basic necessity that is sorely overlooked and ignored in today’s world. Our lives revolve around tech. social media, digital streaming platforms and the go-go ethic of hustle culture dominate. And none of these things are helping us to sleep any better.
So why is sleep so important? Well for starters it gives our bodies a chance to rest and recharge. And not just in the usual sense of feeling well rested when you wake up. A good night’s sleep can actually allow your body to detoxify itself. This flushing out of toxins is known as the body’s toxic evaporation technique. A large part of this detoxification occurs in the brain through the removal of toxic molecules associated with neurodegeneration.
A bad night’s sleep on the other hand is pretty terrible. You wake up tired and cranky and nothing seems to go right in that day. We call this getting up on the wrong side of the bed. Unfortunately, the reality is a bit more worrying, the day seems long and difficult is because your brain has been impaired by the lack of sleep. No joke. Bad sleep leads to poor communication between your neurons. This creates a kind of domino effect that impacts everything from your mood to your mental and motor response timing.
If bad sleep persists over a longer period of time, the results can be extreme. Depression, disease, obesity, poor mental health and early death. So yeah, sleep is super important.
Modern Problems
We talked a little bit about how our current way of living is not 100% conducive to a solid night’s sleep. Social media is an addictive timeless environment rivaled only by the casinos of the Vegas Strip. Binge watching shows on the umpteen number of streaming platforms out there has become a primary form of entertainment. Adding to the problem are the video games, and the mobile games, and the microgames, you get the point. Unfortunately, the body of research on the effect of so much screen time might have on our minds is small or classified. They haven’t even done relevant testing on TV. I think we all know why (spoiler alert: it’s the greed).
Modern Solutions
It is estimated that 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders. Let that sink in. Are they all from too many Netflix and chill sessions, or endless YouTube wormholes?
