Here we are at the end of another unique week in the truly unbelievable times that we are living in. Next week may very well prove to be one of the most important moments in the modern history of the United States of America. So, get out there and vote and let your voice be heard.
And now, back to our regular programming…
Last week, we looked at the history of salves and balms in folk medicine traditions around the world. They were used globally for an array of things, ranging from antibacterial agents to muscle relaxants. This week, we’re diving into how to use salves – and why you should use them.
What’s in a salve?
Salves are traditionally made with a base combination of carrier oils and stiffeners such as coconut oil and beeswax. Coconut oil provides a silky, smooth texture, whereas beeswax acts as a binding and stiffening agent that helps the salve hold its form for ease of use. In addition to these base ingredients, other medicinal plant ingredients are used to create the desired effects, such as ginger and turmeric.
In the case of our Sunset Salve, we use only ethically sourced natural ingredients – including:
- Shea Butter*
- Sweet Almond Oil*
- MCT Coconut Oil*
- Beeswax
- Menthol Crystals*
- Full Spectrum Hemp Flower CBD Concentrate
- Tocopherol
- Cayenne Pepper*
- Arnica*, Comfrey*
- Essential Oils (Camphor, Boswellia*, Cinnamon*, Clove*)
(*USDA Certified Organic)
What Are the Benefits?
Our salve works best for:
- sore muscles following working out, hiking, skating, surfing or any other intensive physical activity you might engage in
- Localized temporary muscle pain
- General tension particularly in the back and neck
- Treatment of ongoing conditions such as chronic back-pain or arthritis
Salves can also be used for skin conditions such as eczema and even acne. However, due to the nature of the ingredients that we use in our salve, it is not for use on broken skin.
How to Apply
To apply, open the tin and use your fingers to scoop out a small amount of the salve. Apply it to the area of the body that is experiencing pain or soreness and massage into the skin. The salve will require some heat to absorb into the skin properly, so do not be afraid to massage it into the affected area as required to ensure absorption.
You should be able to feel the effects within 5-10 minutes of the application. Repeat as necessary.
Get to Know Our Salve
Like all salves or balms, our salve is applied topically to the skin. Due to the nature and ingredients of the salve, we recommend that it not be used on sensitive areas of the body such as the face or scalp.
